Infosys manager Satish Kumar Gupta arrested

Infosys Manager in Bangalore arrested for killing Wife. The city police on Friday arrested Satish Kumar Gupta in connection with the murder of his 29-year-old wife Priyanka, a math teacher at Kanakapura’s Delhi Public School. Priyanka was found murdered on August 10 at their Hulimavu residence. Gupta, 32, an HR manager with Infosys, was picked up for interrogation on Thursday after Priyanka’s cremation. He was produced before the magistrate, who remanded him in police custody for eight days, said BNS Reddy, dcp, southeast. Unconfirmed reports said that Gupta had confessed to murdering his wife. The police have officially not denied Gupta’s confession, but neither have they confirmed it. Sources in the police said he had confessed to the crime. Initial police reports said two strangers, who posed as newspaper vendors, had killed Priyanka by tying her up to a chair and then strangling her before slitting her throat with a kitchen knife. Surprisingly, the bloodied weapon was found at the scene of crime by the police. The fact that it took Gupta an hour to return home despite being informed by his wife about the newspaper vendors created suspicion. The police were puzzled at his version of driving to his office to get the keys to his house door when no one responded to the doorbell. The police wondered why he did not instead peep through the window to find out why Priyanka had not opened the door. The police said contradictions in Gupta’s statements made them detain him for questioning. His father, Anand Kumar Gupta, was also interrogated. Investigators suspected that someone known to Priyanka had murdered her because her jewellery was not touched, neither was the money kept in her bedroom’s almirah. News from chain india

Dr. Laura’s N-Word Rant: Radio Host Apologizes For Offensive Language (AUDIO)

Dr. Laura Schlessinger has apologized after a shocking rant on her radio show this week during which she said the n-word 11 times over the course of five minutes.

In conversation Tuesday with a black female caller who was complaining about her white husband’s racist friends and their use of the word, Schlessinger said:

Black guys use it all the time. Turn on HBO and listen to a black comic, and all you hear is n****, n*****, n*****. I don’t get it. If anybody without enough melanin says it, it’s a horrible thing. But when black people say it, it’s affectionate. It’s very confusing.

LISTEN (via MediaMatters):

After a break, the caller said she was appalled by Schlessinger’s use of the word.

“Oh, then I guess you don’t watch HBO or listen to any black comedians,” she said. “My dear, the point I am trying to make. . . we’ve got a black man as president and we’ve got more complaining about racism than ever. I think that’s hilarious. ”

Schlessinger and the caller then got into an exchange about the use of the word:

CALLER: Is it OK to say that word? Is it ever OK to say that word?
DR. LAURA: It depends how it’s said. Black guys talking to each other seem to think it’s ok.
CALLER: But you’re not black, they’re not black, my husband is white.
DR. LAURA: Oh, I see, so a word is restricted to race. Got it. Can’t do much about that.
CALLER: I can’t believe someone like you is on the radio spewing out the n***** word, and I hope everybody heard it.
DR. LAURA: I didn’t spew out the n***** word!
CALLER: You said “n*****, n*****, n*****” and I hope everybody heard it.
DR. LAURA: Yes they did, and I’ll say it again: n*****, n*****, n***** is what you hear on HBO.
[Crosstalk]
DR. LAURA: Why don’t you let me finish a sentence? Don’t take things out of context. Don’t NAACP me, leave them in context.

“If you’re that hypersensitive about color and don’t have a sense of humor, don’t marry outside of your race,” Schlessinger said after hanging up with the caller.

LISTEN (via MediaMatters):

She apologized the next day, opening her show with an apology.

“Yesterday, I did the wrong thing,” she said. “I didn’t intend to hurt people, but I did. And that makes it the wrong thing to have done. I was attempting to make a philosophical point, and I articulated the “n” word all the way out – more than one time. And that was wrong. I’ll say it again – that was wrong. ”

Schlessinger said she “was so upset [she] could not finish the show. ”

“I pulled myself off the air at the end of the hour,” she said. “I had to finish the hour, because 20 minutes of dead air doesn’t work. I am very sorry. And it just won’t happen again. ”

The Coming Bailout of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac by Publius

From the Boston Globe:Fannie and Freddie were once the most powerful forces in the UShousing industry. They pumped liquidity into the sector by buying upmortgages written by banks and mortgage companies. That kept the costof capital low and increased the volume of mortgages. Governmentbacking allowed the two to borrow money at lower rates than anyone elsein the housing financing market. While Fannie and Freddie operated under some form of congressionaloversight, they ultimately answered to their stockholders. Theirbusiness was making money. They joined Wall Street firms in makingrecord profits — and hauling in record bonuses — by buying, securitizing, and reselling subprime mortgages that never should havebeen written in the first place. The housing market’s collapse sowed destruction and put the nation’sbiggest banks on a government lifeline. No lifeline has been biggerthan the rope the feds threw Fannie and Freddie, though. In September2008, the two firms received a bottomless line of credit. So far, theirtab stands around $148 billion — more than AIG, the company thatinsured all of Wall Street’s worst housing bets, is in hock for. In January, the Congressional Budget Office said the total cost to taxpayers could reach $373 billion. Government aid to Fannie and Freddie has been handed out piecemealso far. It’s easier to stick another $3. 3 billion on the tab, as thetwo did last week after posting massive quarterly losses, than it is tograb the whole $300 billion pie all at once. But there’s a growingrecognition in Washington that Fannie and Freddie can’t keep stringingalong like this. There is no easy way to clean up Fannie and Freddie. Lawmakers can’tjust kill them, as has been suggested. The pair have actually beenoperating under a recent government mandate to increase their mortgagepurchases, as a way of propping up the fragile housing market; if theydisappeared suddenly, the economic aftershocks would be catastrophic. Nor do they have a clear near-term path to privatization. The gapbetween the companies’ estimated bailout tab and what they’ve receivedso far reflects sizable losses they should incur, but don’t havereserves to absorb. Fannie alone has lost more than $150 billion overthe past three years. Both companies were recently taken off the NewYork Stock Exchange. That leaves nationalization. It’s notable that the White House hasuntil after midterm elections to file formal reorganization plans forFannie and Freddie. If Washington can’t kill or privatize the mortgagefirms, it will have to assume responsibility for their massiveliabilities. Read the whole thing here.

anti-terror camps

Muslim cleric holds ‘anti-terror camps’. Tired of Islamic terror camps grabbing headlines, a Pakistani Muslim cleric is fighting back by holding his own “anti-terror camp. “Islamic cleric Shaykh Muhammad Tahir ul-Qadri is the man behind “Al-Hidayah,” an Islamic retreat at the University of Warwick, in the UK. He preaches peace and love and tolerance — but not for radical extremists. “Al Hidayah” means guidance and the three-day retreat is billed as a summer camp for Islamic learning, especially for a younger generation. This year the focus is exclusively on fighting extremism. Ul-Qadri runs a multimedia empire that showcases his lectures in Pakistan, but in Britain he is promoting his recent fatwa on terrorism. He issued the fatwa in March 2010 — a 600-page religious edict that denounces terror attacks. It condemns suicide attackers to hell and disowns them from Islam. Available online in English, Arabic and Urdu, the fatwa meticulously sources the Koran and other classical Islamic texts. It’s viewed by some as arguably the most comprehensive theological rejection of terrorism to date. Something a silent Muslim majority has long demanded, Ul-Qadri told. “The reality is that [Muslims] were waiting for a long, long time to get this kind of voice,” he said. “Their hearts had become desert and their spirits and their souls were thirsty. And unfortunately, the peaceful people are always silent. They don’t create news,” Ul-Qadri added. Al-Hidayah has been running for six years in the UK. About 1,500 participants came this year, many of them teenagers from across Europe and North America. One participant, Qazi, is from Chicago. He says the events of 9/11 left many young American Muslims in a state of confusion. “Definitely people were getting confused, and were worrying about their identity,” Qazi told CNN. “What does it mean to be a Muslim? Does it mean to do something like this?”For whole story

They were sentenced to63 months in federal prison for tax evasion after failing to pay morethan $1 million in income taxes. But, according to Ed, they weren’t going anywhere. Ed and Elainebarricaded themselves inside their concrete walls for nine months. Supporters of the couple would bring by food and ammunition in casethe U. S. Marshals decided to raid the home. Ed was ready for acombat-style standoff, but all his preparations weren’t necessary. InOctober of 2007, U. S. The government does not take lightly its citizens not paying their taxes. “As the great American orator Daniel Webster once argued in front ofthe Supreme Court, ‘An unlimited power to tax involves, necessarily, apower to destroy,’” says Bill Wilson, president of Americans forLimited Government (ALG). “This may be why the IRS is the most fearedfederal agency of them all. ”This also may be why Ed and Elaine Brown barricaded themselves in their home with a full arsenal of weapons.
